Winston - the Milk-Bone(R) Dog
August 28, 2006 - May 20, 2013
In September of 2008, we entered Winston in the "Make a Milk-Bone Moment (TM)"contest. The photo to the left was our entry along with a short story:
"Winston was a gift from my husband on our one year wedding anniversary. He (Winston not my husband) is such a clown. Not a day goes by that he does not make us laugh. Winston brings tremendous joy to our lives and is full of Milk-Bone moments!"
On October 16, we received a letter stating that Winston had been chosen out of thousands of entries as one of the top 100 finalists in the "Milk-Bone 100th Anniversary" Contest. Our entry would be posted online for voting. Voting occurred from October 19 - November 18, 2008 and people could vote once a day for 30 days.
Once we found out we were a finalist, we began sending out press releases. The response from the local media was amazing! We received a lot of press including multiple stories with Cami Mountain on Newsline 9, weekly phone-in's with Dave Kallaway and Stacy Cole on 95.5 WIFC, articles in the Wausau Daily Herald and the City Pages, and too many more to mention. With all of the press, we became known in the Wausau community as "Winston's Parents." Our story even reached the news in Milwaukee and La Crosse! We felt very fortunate for all of the support.
After the votes were counted, we were notified that we were in the top three! We were thrilled and anxious as we waited to hear where we would be traveling for the announcement of the winner. On February 8, 2009, we loaded up our rental mini-van and drove Winston out to Los Angeles. Winston and I, along with the other two other finalists, were going to appear on the Bonnie Hunt show! The show aired on February 23, 2009 and the result...we won!!!
After the announcement was made, Winston's story aired on approximately 370 news stations in two days.
This certainly was the experience of a lifetime and something we will never forget!
